Downtown Dallas, Texas is rich in history and the home of Dealey Plaza, the grassy knoll and the Dallas center for the performing arts.
With the city’s main business district located in downtown, the area that was once deemed to have no cultural character, is undergoing a drastic change with the construction of many new condos that are bringing more permanent residents to the heart of the city. Recent changes are taking place in four downtown areas including, Victory Park, the Arts District, the Trinity River, and the Convention center corridor. The drastic improvements in the downtown are part of a plan made by the city to bring development to downtown Dallas. Changes include a light rail system, renovation of historic buildings, and new construction projects.
Renovation and conversion of many historic buildings on Main Street gives locals and tourists an array of restaurants and hotels to satisfy their needs to cut loose. Pegasus Plaza, Main Street’s main attraction, includes the Magnolia Hotel, Dallas Fish Market, the Iron Cactus Restaurant, Obar, and The Kirby Building.
The center of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is located downtown and can be looked to for the area’s recent growth. It’s two LRT lines are soon to be four. The Trinity Railway Express commuter train runs from south to north and connects downtown Dallas with downtown Fort Worth, ending at Union Station. Amtrak also runs out of Union Station with trains connecting to Chicago and Los Angeles. The McKinney Avenue Transit Authority (META) runs M-line, a free streetcar that runs down St. Paul street from Uptown. There’s no charge for the streetcar, which stops at 825 points throughout the area.
In 2005, One Arts Plaza became one of the first new office building construction projects in downtown in over 20 years. One Arts Plaza is a 24 story skyscraper that houses residents, class A office space, and retailers such as; Dali Wine Bar, Screen Door, 7-11 Corporate Dallas Offices, Jorge’s Tex Mex Café, and Fedora Italian Bistro.
Victory Park houses the American Airlines Center (built in 2001) along with new high rise hotels and office buildings. Downtown Dallas is home to one of the worlds largest arts districts. Now in its final stages of a ten-year construction project, Dallas’s Arts District will receive a 2300 seat opera house and new theaters.
The Trinity River corridor is undergoing the most dramatic changes out of all the districts. The Trinity River Project is a project to return the river, which artificially runs in a straight line through the downtown area, to its natural course. The project will create two large lakes that will boarder downtown. The project also includes plans to improve the levies to protect downtown Dallas from flooding.
