Euless, Texas, nicknamed “Tree City USA,” is a city of over 54,000, and is part of the Mid-Cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. It was named after Judy Trigg Euless, who arrived to the area with his wife in 1879. He brought a cotton gin with him, and petitioned the commissioners to build a road that passed through his property. His prosperity and that of the town became quickly interlinked, and the local farmers named the community after him.
Euless remains a tight-knit community, though it has certainly grown since its early days. City officials have worked tirelessly to preserve the city’s historical treasures, including restorations of the Himes Log House (1850s log cabin) and the McCormick Barn (built after WWI using lumber from Camp Bowie), and the restoration and conversion of Fuller House (Euless’s first brick house) into the city museum. All three buildings can now be visited at Euless’s beautiful Heritage Park. Free park tours are offered on the second Saturday of the month from 1pm-5pm. Interested visitors can also schedule special group tours.
One of the reasons why Euless has earned its “Tree City USA” moniker is due to the incredible number and size of its parks – 18 in total. The city also strives to practice environmental sustainability, and even recognizes one homeowner and one business each month for its environmentally-friendly (and beautiful) landscaping efforts.
Another important site in Euless for those interested in enjoying nature – and getting a few rounds in – is the award-winning Texas Star Golf Course. As Keith Foster, architect for the course, says, “nature is important to the City of Euless and they take pride in their trees. We wanted the golf course to be an extension of their beliefs, doing things for the future which benefit nature for the long term . . . Our job was to find the right holes for the land so that it feels like it has always been there.” The designers definitely succeeded in their endeavor. Golf Digest’s annual review of “Places to Play” gives the course four stars; T & L Golf lists it among the top ten courses in Texas, and best among DFW-area courses, and Golfweek ranked it #14 among all municipal golf courses in the nation – and number one in the state.
The Texas Star Golf Course, and other important sport sites are centered around The Parks at Texas Star Sports Complex. These include the Dr. Pepper StarCenter ice rink, Softball World, the Veterans’ Memorial Youth Baseball Stadium, several baseball and soccer fields, batting cages, a driving range – this sports-plex has it all. In addition, the entire site is spectator-friendly, with landscaped walkways, a pavilion, and playground, as well as a “Fielders’ Choice” concession stand. The ideal site for tournaments and special events, many activities in Euless take place here.
