The town of Farmers Branch, with over 28,000 residents, is a suburb of Dallas and a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex – giving it a special status a small town nestled in the midst of a cosmopolitan metro area. Farmers Branch is known for its quiet neighborhoods, good schools, and outstanding services, while major businesses take advantage of the low tax rate and favorable incentives. For anyone looking to enjoy the comforts of a small town – while staying close to big-city amenities – Farmers Branch is an ideal location.
One of the nicest aspects of Farmers Branch is its extensive, award-winning system of public parks – 27 in total, all offering a variety of amenities. In fact, its nickname is “The City in a Park.” These parks often include playgrounds, jogging paths, exercise courses, picnic and grilling areas, sport areas (from basketball and volleyball to tennis and soccer, and even horseshoes), as well as gardens, creeks, lakes, and pools. Roses are also an important part of Farmers Branch, with several rose displays throughout the city. The Dallas Rose Society meets here each month.
Farmers Branch’s most popular park is the Historical Park, which is a unique concept spread over 22 acres. In 1981 the Historical Preservation and Restoration Board was charged with the task of developing an outdoor museum to preserve the history of Texas and Peters Colony. Since its inception in 1986, the park has continued its mission of preserving and sharing the area’s history, with 50,000 visitors each year visiting the park, and attending its special events, lectures, and other programs.
Another important place to visit in Farmers Branch is the recently-opened Liberty Plaza. Dedicated to the heroism of the sons and daughters of Farmers Branch in the armed forces, it boasts an enormous 60-by-30-foot American flag, waving 150 feet above the ground. More than just a dedicatory monument, Liberty Plaza features patriotic sculptures, a walking trail, a water feature, and a meditation area.
Just across the way from Liberty Plaza is the Dr. Pepper StarCenter. This facility is both a meeting and a recreational space, with two NHL-regulation ice surfaces, restaurant and bar, and the Farmers Branch Conference Center.
Recreation in Farmers Branch is also enhanced by its expansive Community Recreation Center. Besides the standard exercise facilities, courts, and other amenities, the Center has many elements directed at adolescents, with its Teen Room (equipped with projection screen and surround sound, laptops, Wii, Xbox, billiards, and other games), as well as teen-oriented activities like C.S.I. Camp, Middle School Madness, movie nights, and much more.
Farmers Branch also preserves its small-town feel with special events like the Holiday Tour of Lights. For a month leading up to New Year’s Eve, Christmas light enthusiasts can enjoy 300,000 lights through town and into the Historical Park.
Farmers Branch is an ideal location for those families wishing to stay close to a big city – but still enjoy the comfort and intimacy of a small town. It’s also a lovely place to visit, especially if you time your trip with one of its many special events. Read all about living in Farmers Branch apartments.
