Katy, Texas is a suburb of Houston located along Interstate 10 just east of downtown Houston. The city was named for the old Missouri – Kansas – Texas railroad (known as the K-T) that ran through in the eighteen hundreds. Katy was formerly called Cane Island from the Cane Island Creek that runs through it and the fact that one of the largest crops grown in the area was once sugar cane.

Several businesses have their corporate headquarters located in or just outside of Katy, including the Igloo Corporation, Academy Sports & Outdoors, and KBR. Average income for a family living in Katy has been recorded at approximately $51k. The proximity of these large corporations and downtown Houston make Katy a good place to live and have a good chance of obtaining a good paying job.

Katy is home to a large number of upscale apartment living complexes. This rapid growth has resulted in the city of Katy annexing several parcels of land that were formerly unincorporated. Most of these fell under the territory of Houston itself which had to release these areas before they could become part of Katy.

Educational opportunities abound in the Katy area with four elementary schools, two junior high schools and one community wide high school district. The University of Houston, and Houston community college are both located nearby to provide post secondary education to the residents of Katy.

Katy has several recreational and cultural facilities including the Katy family YMCA and Forbidden Gardens. This outdoor museum depicts many great moments of Chinese history and has a display of the first emperor’s terra cotta army done to 1/3 scale.
